Etchings and Collographs

Intaglio Printing and Collographs

Intaglio printing consists of techniques where an image is incised into the surface of a plate. The plates can be copper, zinc and aluminium. These incisions or marks are created and then etched by placing the plate in acid. After this process, ink is applied to the plate, then rubbed by using scrim to remove excess ink, rolled through a press to produce a print.

A collograph is a similar process, but includes the basic principle of relief printing. PVA glue, tile cement and epoxy resin are materials that can be used to form the relief, then plant materials can be pressed into the plate, then removed before fully set. The plates are then inked up and printed in the same way.
